Ratan Tata once quoted “There are many things that, if I have to relive, maybe I will do it another way. But I would not like to look back and think what I have not been able to do.”
Ratan Naval Tata, who is a Padma Bhushan(2000) and Padma Vibhushan(2008) awardee, is celebrating his 85th Birthday today. Time and Time again he has been praised for being a man with a golden heart.
Ratan Tata is an Indian industrialist, investor, philanthropist, and former chairman of Tata Sons who is currently serving as the chairman of Tata Trusts. Ratan Tata has helped the Tata Group grow over 40 times in revenue under his leadership.
He is the Gem of A India…
Ratan Tata is not just Tata’s chairman but a well-versed patriot who has not just helped his company grow but also laid the foundation for the group to compete at the global level. Ratan Tata’s Tata Group has taken India on the global map as an economic force to be reckoned with and has helped India survive some of its most challenging times. Let’s look at a few things that prove why he is the Gem.
1. Started as a ground worker:
He was the successor of Jamshedji Tata, who also received an offer from the Tech Giant IBM but Ratan Tata instead chose to join the family business, at Tata Steel, where he began working at Tata Steel. And at Tata Steel, he would shovel limestone into the furnace, and at times, would be in charge of handling the furnace.
2. A man who kept his promise:
Ratan Tata’s reason behind not getting married is as wholesome as it can get. He loved a girl in America and wanted to marry her but due to circumstances he had to return to India, he later found out that the girl married another guy of her family’s choice but he had promised her that he won’t marry another girl and he kept his promise till date.
3. Respecting every individual:
Ratan Tata never allows the mistreatment of men and women. He is known to be easily accessible and communicate with workers and who’s who of power list with the same dignity and love. There have been many such instances and experiences of Ratan Tata treating every individual with a great amount of respect at any given place and time. Remember the 26/11 attacks, here is what Ratan Tata did for the employees after the attack at the Taj Hotel
4. The idea of Nano:
One could debate about it but we have to give credit to Ratan Tata for the most affordable car. Nano brought a revolution in the car industry in India and those who dreamt of owning a car, fulfilled their dreams when they bought one. Ratan Tata came up with the idea of this car in 2001 and promised Indians to make it a reality. In 2008, he made this idea a reality.
5. Animal Lover:
The renowned headquarters of Tata Sons in Bombay House has a special kennel for stray dogs. Ratan Tata himself owns several pet dogs.
6. Tata Trusts:
Tata Trusts own a 66 per cent stake in the Tata Group. Over the years when Ratan Tata was the chairman of Tata Trusts, they gave away about Rs. 6100 crores in charity for various causes, mainly helping the people in drought-affected areas. Tata Trusts donated 600 crores when India was fighting the pandemic.
7. Ratan Tata On Online Hate:
Ratan Tata called out this online bullying by people and urged them to be more sympathetic in these difficult times. His post was very emotional and people appreciated him being so inspiring yet again.
8. Ratan Tata Slammed Companies For Laying Off Employees:
There is a reason people want to work for the Tata Group and Ratan Tata’s view on employees layoff and slamming big giants is an example of that. “These are the people that have worked for you. These are the people who have served you all their careers. You send them out to live in the rain. Is that your definition of ethics when you treat your labour force that way?” questioned Ratan Tata in an interview to the giants.
These are merely a few highlights of Ratan Tata being a gem. One could talk for hours straight in admiration of this gem who has not just made his name but earned it. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, the team would wish for his well-being and healthy fruitful life ahead.
