In the vibrant landscape of Indian music, few artists manage to capture the imagination of both critics and listeners alike as quickly as Sai Abhyankkar has. With a lineage rooted in music, given that he is the son of renowned playback singers Tippu and Harini, Abhyankkar’s rise to fame seems almost predestined. His journey, marked by the phenomenal success of his debut single ‘Katchi Sera’ and the recent release of ‘Aasa Kooda,’ showcases his talent and dedication to his craft.
The Breakthrough: ‘Katchi Sera’
Sai Abhyankkar burst onto the music scene with ‘Katchi Sera,’ a track that quickly became a viral sensation. Directed by Ken Royson, the song is a delightful blend of folk and jazz elements, creating a sound that is both unique and captivating. The lyrics, penned by Adesh Krishna, seamlessly complement Abhyankkar’s composition, resulting in a track that resonates with a wide audience. The song’s success, marked by over 36 million views on YouTube, was a testament to Abhyankkar’s musical prowess and innovative approach to music.
Reflecting on the creation of ‘Katchi Sera,’ Abhyankkar shared in a recent interview, “It all happened during a casual composing session. I have this practice of composing sequences daily. One week, I ended up composing seven to eight tracks in just eight days. And the lyrics for one of the tracks penned by Adesh Krishna perfectly complemented my tunes. That’s how we decided to go ahead with ‘Katchi Sera.’ We just wanted a song that sounded aesthetic and rooted, had its acoustics in place, and was catchy and groovy to listen to.”
The Support of Family and Mentors
Growing up in a musically inclined family, Abhyankkar received immense support from his parents. They ensured he had access to proper musical training and enrolled him in Hentry Kuruvilla Sir’s music college, where he learned production and sound engineering. Their encouragement allowed him to pursue his passion for music wholeheartedly. “My parents have never come to what I do, but they put me onto proper Gurus for my production and everything. They guided me by putting me into Hentry Kuruvilla Sir’s music college, from where I learned production and sound engineering. After my 10th standard, I did online schooling and they helped me to pursue my dream of doing what I want. So I think I’m ever grateful to them,” Abhyankkar explained in the interview.
Facing the Spotlight
One of the memorable aspects of ‘Katchi Sera’ was Abhyankkar’s performance in the music video, alongside Samyuktha Vishwanathan. Despite his initial reluctance to face the camera, he managed to deliver a performance that resonated with viewers. “I am quite reticent and have always steered clear of the camera. Needless to say, I was a bundle of nerves during the shooting as I had to perform in front of legions of people. I think I did a decent job considering it was a brand-new process. Once I decided to face the camera, I wanted the spirit of the song to reflect in my performance and I gave it my best,” he shared.
The New Release: ‘Aasa Kooda’
Building on the success of ‘Katchi Sera,’ Abhyankkar recently released a new track titled ‘Aasa Kooda,’ a breezy romantic song featuring his sister Sai Smriti. Directed by Thejo Bharathwaj, with lyrics by Sathyan Ilanko, and choreography by Anusha Viswanathan, the song has already started to capture the hearts of listeners. The music video also features actress Preity Mukundhan, adding a visual charm to the enchanting melody.
