Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed the symbolic importance of the 206-foot Mahashilpam of Ambedkar, describing it as a representation not only for the state but for the entire country. The unveiling of this colossal statue adds a powerful symbol to Vijayawada’s landscape, honoring the legacy and contributions of BR Ambedkar. Last year witnessed the inauguration of the tallest Ambedkar statue outside India, named the ‘Statue of Equality,’ standing at 19 feet in Maryland, US. Crafted by sculptor Ram Sutar, the same artist behind Sardar Patel’s statue, it is worth noting that India is now home to the world’s tallest Ambedkar statue, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to commemorating key figures in its history.
The ‘Statue of Justice’ stands impressively at 125 feet, mounted on an 81-feet pedestal. This ambitious project, with a budget of ₹404.35 crore, spans 18.81 acres of lush green parkland. A true testament to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the statue, from raw material sourcing to design, is a product of indigenous craftsmanship, utilizing approximately 400 tonnes of steel. The area surrounding the ‘Statue of Justice,’ including Swaraj Maidan, has undergone extensive redevelopment. To complement the majestic statue, water bodies in the forecourt, a three-sided peripheral water body for the pedestal, and a captivating musical water fountain have been meticulously integrated into the landscape. The revitalized space now offers a visually appealing and serene environment.
The project extends beyond the statue itself, as LED screens have been strategically placed to narrate the life of Ambedkar, providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of his legacy. Additionally, a convention center with a seating capacity of 2,000, an expansive 8,000 sq ft food court, and a dedicated children’s playing area have been developed at the site.
