Cricket is arguably the most followed sport in India at the moment. It all started when India Won the 1983 World Cup (named the Prudential Cup then), Cricket became a well-followed sport, and new heroes emerged from difficult situations taking India to Glory. The Indian Cricket world has seen many Milestones, like the T20 World Cup 2007, the World Cup 2011, and The IPL(Indian Premier League).

The IPL is treated almost like a festival in India, and not just Indians but cricketers from all over the world come together to celebrate it. The IPL is said to not only have bought immense revenue but also give opportunity to the budding youngsters. The BCCI(Board Of Cricket Control In India) has generated humongous revenues from this event alone and they have become the richest cricket board in the world. 

 

The BCCI has been extending its arms toward women’s Cricket for some time now, and it has produced Results. From the Women’s Cricket World Cup to the WPL. For a multitude of reasons, 2023 can be considered a pivotal year for women’s cricket in India. Under the captaincy of Shefali Verma, India secured a remarkable achievement by winning the inaugural Women’s U19 World Cup in South Africa.

 

Later in the year, the senior women’s team won a historic gold medal in the T20 debut of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. It then played Tests at home after a gap of 11 years with back-to-back wins over England and Australia. Not to forget, the BCCI announced match-fee parity for the men’s and women’s international players.

 

The WPL has emerged to be the Biggest Women’s Cricket League in the World. Players from all over the world have been a part of the leagues. The League was started in 2023 and the female spectators were granted free entry, tickets are now mandatory to watch any match at the venues. The first half saw matches in Bengaluru getting great footfall for all the games it hosted, reinforcing the fact that there’s a strong audience for WPL.

 

The WPL has 5 teams, they are, The Mumbai Indians captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, who were also the Champions of the last edition, The Delhi Capitals Captained by Meg Laning- the runners of the previous edition, The UP Warriors Captained by Alyssa Healy, The Royal Challengers Bangalore captained by Smriti Mandhana, and The Gujrat Giants Captained by Beth Mooney. This Edition of the WPL has seen so many nail-biting finishes and some heroic performances while the Playoffs are yet to happen.

 

To put into perspective how well this season of the WPL is going experts predict the WPL could generate up to Rs 125 crore in sponsorship revenue for the BCCI and its five teams.

The standing as of now is DC is at the top of the table, Followed by MI and RCB. These 3 teams have qualified for the Playoffs where as UP and Gujrat miss qualifying this season. The Playoff matches are scheduled to be held in the Arun Jaitely Stadium of Delhi on 15th and 17th March.
