While it is common for athletes to start practising a sport in their late teenage or early adulthood, it might be an unheard phenomenon to see someone excel in this field while in their 50s. A woman named Somasundari Manoharan shifted to work out to seek relief from her leg and knee pain.
The journey which began with an unusual turn of events, led to her finding a new passion at an age when others would retire from any active passion.
Who is Somasundari Manoharan?
Manoharan might be seen lifting a total of 210 kilos in squats and deadlifts today, but that hasn’t been the case always. A homemaker in Chennai, Manoharan turned to gyming when he started having problems with slow movement while walking long distances.
“A few years ago, I developed knee pain and my doctors advised surgery. My son Karthikeyan taught me strength exercises. My pain disappeared in six months,” said Manoharan to Times of India.
After entering the gym for the first time, there was no looking back for Manoharan. With the help of her son, she went on to discover different techniques in the gym, which included the likes of deadlifts, planks, push-ups, squats, dumbbells, etc. According to a report by the New Indian Express, she was later joined by her daughter-in-law, who became famous in their gym.
“Most of the women in my age group wear a sari and they have been wearing it for a long time. They know how to manage these activities in a sari.”… said Somasundari Manoharan while talking about her gym attire. It became relatively easier for her to work out in the gym regularly, as it belonged to the family.
Besides the mother, all other family members are extremely health conscious. Along with routine exercise, they also maintain a proper diet for better and healthy living.
