The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is gearing up for a major transformation in its public transport services. The corporation has unveiled ambitious plans to replace a significant portion of its Airport Volvo buses with electric AC buses. In a move aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing passenger comfort, BMTC is set to roll out 320 low-floor electric AC buses, each measuring 12 meters, at an estimated cost of ₹150 crore. This decision comes on the heels of the State government’s approval to integrate electric AC buses into BMTC’s existing fleet. The new buses are expected to replace the current Vayu Vajra Volvo buses that shuttle passengers to the Kempegowda International Airport from various parts of the city.

The introduction of electric AC buses is a significant step forward in the effort to make Bengaluru’s public transportation system more eco-friendly and passenger-friendly. The 320 electric AC buses, under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, are expected to herald a new era of comfort and convenience for commuters in the city. One of the key factors behind this initiative is the growing concern over air pollution and the need to reduce carbon emissions. By transitioning to electric buses, BMTC aims to contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment for residents. The move aligns with the State government’s push for cleaner and more sustainable transportation options.
In addition to the 320 electric AC buses, BMTC is also set to receive 180 Tata Motors non-AC electric buses in the coming month. This addition will further bolster the corporation’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Currently, BMTC already has a fleet of 390 electric buses, including 90 NTPC-JBM Auto JV 9-meter midi-buses and 300 Switch Mobility 12-meter buses. The new buses are scheduled to begin their operations from the Shantinagar and K.R. Puram depots within the next two months. These depots will serve as the starting point for the electric buses, and they will gradually become a common sight on the streets of Bengaluru. The deployment of these buses will not only enhance the passenger experience but also support BMTC’s mission to improve the overall quality of public transportation in the city.
Once all 921 electric buses, including the 320 AC buses and the 180 non-AC buses, have been integrated into the BMTC fleet, they will be assigned to various depots across the city. Commuters residing in or traveling to areas such as Jayanagar, Hennur, Deepanajlinagar, R.R. Nagar, Peenya 2nd Stage, Jigani, Seegehalli, and Hosakote will benefit from the convenience and efficiency of these new electric buses. This strategic distribution aims to enhance accessibility and cater to the diverse needs of residents in different parts of the city.
The transition to electric AC buses is not just a step towards a greener and more sustainable future; it also signifies a significant improvement in passenger comfort. Electric buses are known for their quieter operation, reduced vibrations, and lower emissions. Passengers can expect a smoother and more pleasant ride, making their daily commutes a more enjoyable experience.
