Street Named After AR Rahman: Here Are Foreign Streets Named After Indians

To honour the great Indian musician AR Rahman, the Canadian city of Markham, named a street after him. The musician took to Twitter to express his gratitude for the recognition that he had received, as he never imagined that he would get such an honour. 

 

Let us look at other famous Indians who have a street named after them:

  • Sunil Gavaskar

Being a famous Indian cricketer has its perks. Sunil Gavaskar has a street named after him in New Zealand in a locality called Khandala. The street is called Gavaskar Place.

  • Mahatma Gandhi:

A famous freedom fighter and Indian has various streets named after him in India and abroad. Many roads in the Netherlands, USA, Germany, Philippines, Iran, and Canada have been named a road after him.

  • Swami Vivekananda:

The famous Hindu philosopher and preacher have a road named after him in Chicago. It was named after him after he gave a historic speech in the Parliament of Religions. The street is called Swami Vivekananda Way.

  • Indira Gandhi:

Apart from having an airport named after our famous Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi has a street named after her in Tanzania. The city of Dar es Salam has been named a street after Indira Gandhi, Indira Gandhi Street.

  • Rabindranath Tagore:

The famous poet influenced Indians and those people living abroad. Mr Tagore visited Berlin thrice, where he met several brilliant people such as Albert Einstein. To commemorate his 100th birth anniversary, Israel named Rabindranath Tagore Street a street after him in Tel Aviv.

  • Jawaharlal Nehru:

Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. His policies of positive collectivism and friendship created a positive image for the country abroad. The Russians, to honour him, named a square after him in Moscow’s Vernadsky Prospekt, the Jawaharlal Nehru Square or Ja Square.

  • Bhagat Singh

Shaheed Bhagat Singh has a chowk named after him in Pakistan’s Lahore. According to various sources, he was executed there to honour him; the Pakistani government changed the name of Shadman chowk to Bhagat Singh Chowk. However, due to hardline Islamic fundamentalists’ opposition, the order stayed.
