Fact Check: UAE Renames Al-Minhad District And The Surrounding Areas As ‘Hind City’ To Honour Indian Ties?

India and UAE ties have lately developed extremely friendly and supportive under the leadership of Narendra Modi’s BJP government. Huge attention has been paid towards bridging the gaps and developing personal rapport for better Indo-UAE relations. As a consequence of all these bilateral meetings and friendly advances, UAE is home to around 3 Million Indians.

UAE Vice President Rashid Al Maktoum Renames Al Minhad District as Hind City

On Sunday, January 29, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, The Ruler, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, gave the command to rename Al Minhad to “Hind City.” Though soon after this announcement Indians and some popular names took over the news and translated it into a claim that the Dubai district has been renamed as an acknowledgement of India and the contribution of Hindus to humanity.

The city which is divided into four zones and spans an area of 83.9km, these zones will now be called – ‘Hind 1, Hind 2, Hind 3 and Hind 4’. The Hind City will be served by major roads including Emirates Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road. The newly renamed district is one of the key residential areas in the country.

The newly renamed city is located in the Al Qudra desert near Damac Hill 2. The area is known for housing several Emirati citizens as it is connected to major roads, including Emirates Road, Al Ain Road, and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road.

Are The Claims True?

National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), RP Singh, shared the claim on Twitter. Another handle ‘Megh Updates’, too, shared the claim, which had garnered over a million views at the time of writing this story.

UAE’s government’s media office has clarified in a statement that the renaming had nothing to do with any country. Adding to that the word ‘Hind’ is an Arabic name that has its roots in the region’s ancient civilization. In fact, Sheikh Mohammed’s first wife is also named Hind. Hind bint Maktoum Al Maktoum, the senior wife of Sheikh Mohammed, married him on 26 April 1979 in a grand ceremony.
