Uber, the renowned ride-hailing giant, has rolled out its eco-friendly service, “Uber Green,” in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Commencing its operations in central Bengaluru, the green initiative is set to expand to other parts of the city soon. This eco-conscious move aligns with Uber’s global efforts to promote sustainability, providing users in Bengaluru the option to choose environmentally friendly rides through electric vehicles. The inaugural ride was ceremoniously flagged off by Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Information Technology, and BioTechnology, at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2023 near the Palace Grounds.
Uber’s commitment to environmental sustainability takes a significant stride with the introduction of “Uber Green” services in Bengaluru. The launch, initially covering central Bengaluru, is poised to extend its reach across the city in the coming days. Users in Bengaluru now have the option to contribute to a greener environment by choosing electric vehicles for their Uber rides, a feature accessible through the Uber Green option on the app, available starting today.
The ceremonial flagging off of the first Uber Green vehicle by Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Information Technology, and BioTechnology, marked the commencement of this eco-friendly initiative. Speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2023, Minister Kharge emphasized the collective responsibility to improve air quality in Bengaluru. He stated, “Improving air quality in Bengaluru is our collective responsibility. This launch by Uber endorses our commitment to a Green summit. We have taken tangible steps that pave the way for impactful and meaningful changes in the long run and foster a culture of sustainability.”
Uber’s “Green” services are not a novelty in the global context, with successful implementations in various locations worldwide. Bengaluru becomes the second city in India to embrace Uber Green, following its operational success in Mumbai, where riders have actively chosen the environmentally conscious option.Highlighting Uber’s dedication to sustainability, a high-ranking official from Uber India remarked, “Uber has an unwavering commitment to sustainability, and Uber Green is a step towards that. The launch in Bengaluru marks our second stop in the country for Uber Green. It is already operational in Mumbai, where many riders are using it.”
