Poonam Rana, 35 years old, who lived the last six years of her life in a vegetative state with ventilator support, has died in Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. Her treatment is probably the longest in the medical history of India.

This case is also the longest hospital stay after Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse who spent 42 years in a vegetative state in a Mumbai hospital until she died in 2015. Poonam was admitted to Manipal Hospitals seven years ago for stomach pain. What seemed to be a routine case requiring simple surgery, saw numerous twists and turns and countless complications.
Rejish Nair, Poonam’s husband, knocked at the door of every organization he could think of in these seven years to save her. “But, my girl is gone now. All that pain she and the entire family suffered all these years has turned meaningless now.”Poonam belonged to Delhi and married Rajesh who is a native of Kerala. She worked for Accenture in Bengaluru and the couple lived there.
Poonam has been in an irreversible state of coma since the surgery. She has been bedridden in the same hospital and that is why Rejish suspects foul play. Manipal Hospital has issued a statement on her death: “She was admitted on October 2, 2015, to MICU. She has been taken care of since then and the best possible care has been provided to her all these years. She succumbed to the illness on May 24, 2022, at 12 pm despite the best efforts.”
Over thirty doctors have attended her till now. With a medical summary of more than 30 pages, the hospitalization bill shot up to 10 crore rupees. Rejish has informed the Jeevan Bima Nagar police station of Poonam’s death and has asked for an investigative autopsy and sample of viscera to be saved for further probe.
He suspects poisoning and claims that he has substantial evidence. “I haven’t received the complete case document from the hospital yet … But I have decided to fight this injustice. The hospital out of sheer negligence shattered all our lives and killed my wife,” Rejish said.

Her last rites were held at Wilson Garden Crematorium on Thursday following the autopsy at Sir CV Raman General hospital.
