Is Bollywood in a loss?

Earlier this year, Trade experts predicted heavy losses for Bollywood amid the film release delays and shoot cancellations due to the surge in Covid 19 cases in the country. However, this is not the only reason Bollywood has witnessed a downfall this year.

Post-pandemic, cinema in the country started witnessing viewers willing to return but more than Covid-19 what would make the viewers make the decision will be based on the film and its appeal. While one can state that Bollywood has been a victim of propaganda, agenda, etc., let’s be honest here, Bollywood has been below par this year.

Why did Bollywood fail?

Rise of South Indian Films…

Bollywood films were barely comparable to the reception received by South Indian Films this year. We saw films like RRR, KGF 2, Kantara, etc., do well at the cinema by providing the content and viewing experience one wishes to see and no Bollywood movie could come close to the content, casting and experience provided by these South Indian Films.

Lack of New Content…

There is a huge contrast between the content of Hindi Cinema in theatres and in OTT platforms. The films released in theatres were just not watchable. Films like Jersey, Vikram Vedha and Laal Singh Chaddha are just not original. And irrespective of the casting choices they couldn’t perform.

No recognition and Support for Good Bollywood movies…

Those who complain about the lack of new content in Bollywood need to reflect upon themselves. Films like Brahmastra, Action Hero, Uunchai, Goodbye, Bhediya, etc., were not merely just movies but excelled in different domains. Brahmastra was visually on point, Action Hero was a good masala movie and Amitabh Bacchan just nailed it in Uunchai and Goodbye.

With most of the things that went wrong with Bollywood, hoping the new year 2022 brings something new that can help Bollywood to regain its momentum. With some great films lined up next year where we see the biggies like SRK and Salman Khan returning to the big screen, it will be a treat for the fans waiting for their return.
