Clashes broke out between two groups of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on the occasion of Ram Navami. According to the FIR filed by the Delhi Police, the clashes broke out because non-veg food was allegedly served in the hostel mess.

Nearly 16 students from both sides of the group were injured during the clash. According to reports, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were involved in the clash. The fight occurred during the evening of Ram Navami.

The police have stated that a case was registered based on a complaint filed by members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA in the early morning of 11th April against unknown ABVP students.

The JNUSU has alleged that the members of the ABVP stopped students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess and created a violent atmosphere. However, the ABVP denied the charge and claimed that “Leftists” obstructed the puja programme organised at the hostel on Ram Navami.

Both the groups have accused each other of throwing stones and injuring their members. After the violence stopped, the JNUSU and ABVP took out their marches inside the campus.

When the police got a PCR call, they immediately rushed to the campus to ensure that the violence did not escalate further. Moreover, officials stated that the injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for their treatment.

According to police reports, the FIR has been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code such as 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341(wrongful restraint), and 506 (criminal intimidation) among others. In addition, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C, stated that the members of the ABVP will also be filing a complaint on Monday.
